Guest Post - Engaging Students With Wowzers

It was my lucky day when I won 10 subscriptions to Wowzers at the annual Cue Conference in Palm Beach, CA. The perfect amount for my 4th grade Title I class in rural California. My students' demographics are low socio-economic and 70% are English language learners. We had been working hard in math all year, but barely making minimum achievement. Wowzers really turned it around for us.

We implement Wowzers within our centers. Class started with the lesson of the day, and then the students grouped up and rotated through centers. Center 1 was the Computer Center where students went through the Wowzers program doing the lessons, games, quests, and quizzes. At Center 2, the students worked on Wowzers’ written work and/or activities, such as the blended learning, higher order thinking, and writing in math worksheets. I was at Center 3 working with students in remediation and reviewing progress. Wowzers’ homework assignments have 3 different levels that accommodate all students.

It is amazing how this program differentiates for students. Student engagement dramatically increased. The students who were more advanced soared through the program, while struggling students started grasping the concepts. Students who were reluctant to do math, now couldn’t wait to use Wowzers. The big "Ah-Ha" moment was when the entire class wanted to give up their recess to use Wowzers! That is when I knew this program, with excellent content and student engagement, is special.

Lucky? Yes! Wowzers has changed the way math is done in my classroom and I am looking forward to a full year of implementation next year.
