Our customer experience team had the pleasure of meeting Ann Francis when she called us to order more credits for her students. Ms Francis is a special education teacher at Mallory Elementary in Buffalo, MO for grades K-4 and Wowzers is one of the online learning tools she uses for her math curriculum. She was so enthusiastic about Wowzers that we had to find out more about her!
How do you use technology in your classroom?
Technology has been important to my classroom but has been extremely hard to come by as I teach in a small rural district. I got an iPad in February of 2011 and my teaching changed forever. I have looked at over 1500 apps and work with several different companies. I am able to pick apps that target skills my students need. For math I use a combination of Wowzers, Accelerated Math, IXL Math and XtraMath. Using technology has helped me greatly with individualizing instruction.
How long have you been using Wowzers and in what capacity?
I have been using Wowzers since February. The boys I had were hard to motivate and I thought we would try this. I was reluctant at first because I did not want to create play time. Was I wrong. Wiith the timed portions, the individual games and the dashboard, I can keep data for IEP goals and not have to create more work for myself. I have a student that never has done homework but has used Wowzers at home several times.
What is your favorite aspect of Wowzers?
My favorite aspect is that the students come tell me what they have learned and what they feel they have mastered and are really taking responsibility for their learning. Wowzers is student driven and they must master the objective to go on.
How is Wowzers different from other products you have tried?
There are many things about Wowzers that are different. Being able to have the students work at their own pace is critical instruction for me. In the classroom when they dont get it, they are pushed on. We have not finished very many skills but they are solid on the ones they have completed. Having them redo the section if mastery is not met, in a non-insulting way, has been wonderful. Having the dashboard to keep track of students for working outside of class so I can reward them has motivated them to work harder.
What kind of effect did Wowzers have on your students?
While it is hard for me to flush out which program has done what, the combination of solutions have created tremendous growth in the students. One student has grown 2.3 years and is at 5.7 as a 4th grader, and another at 4.9. These are students who struggle to read and be motivated.
Ms. Francis used Wowzers as part of her math curriculum and saw the kind of results individualized online education can yield. She was able to effectively use Wowzers' CODiE Award winning classroom management system to help her keep each student at their own pace and then reward them for completing sections.
