Difference between “built for” and “repurposed” Common Core programs

Designed with Common Core in Mind

2013 is here! That means the 2014 Common Core State Standards (CCSS) deadline is more in vision than ever before. The need for effective digital mathematics materials to guide schools’ transitions to the Common Core standards is becoming more and more apparent. The problem is, how do we know which CCSS materials are “effective” and which are not? CCSS logo

New platforms, curriculum programs, and textbooks are beginning to flood the market, claiming to utilize the Common Core standards. But often times, these “CCSS” programs try to pass off familiar, repurposed programs that are simply retrofitted to “work” with the CCSS. The content is diluted or recycled to fit what is needed and does not take the necessary steps to fully cultivate understanding and mastery of the new standards. As an education material consumer seeking the best CCSS materials out there, separating the authentic from the repurposed at first glance can be very difficult.

CCSS Focused

To make the distinction between “new and effective” and “old news,” you must take a close look at the efforts made to integrate the standards and techniques of CCSS content and assessments. Wowzers clearly sets itself apart from repurposed, traditional programs because it is built from the ground up with the Common Core standards and assessments as the focal point, implementing new, easy-to-use, and engaging media to bring students into the digital learning age.

After exploring Wowzers for just a few minutes, it is clear each interactive lesson, practice set, and assessment question assists in developing the scaffolding and basic skills required to reach upper level thinking, while mirroring learning and assessment environments that will be experienced within the adopted PARCC and Smarter Balanced assessment formats. Wowzers prepares the student to be successful in every way possible, something the other retrofitted platforms cannot match.

Common Core Data at your Fingertips

Wowzers’ CCSS focus also provides direct analytical data based around the Common Core standards to teachers and administrators. The Wowzers dashboard feature compiles and organizes data from each student’s responses and interactions, and develops easy-to-read reports that are tied to individual Common Core standards. Utilizing this data, the dashboard virtually creates a “snapshot” of real-time statuses depicting each student’s Common Core progress and understanding. Once again, other repurposed programs simply do not offer the same Common Core focus and specificity.

Don’t be fooled by repurposed CCSS products. In direct comparison, the level of Common Core focus built into every element of Wowzers is what puts the platform at the cutting edge of CCSS classroom reform and makes it the math solution for your students.
