At Wowzers, we designed our digital math content to provide a unique, beneficial learning experience to each and every student. This includes going to great lengths to ensure that students diagnosed with special needs (ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome, etc.) receive opportunities to flourish and learn using our fun game-based content.
Because Wowzers is an assistive technology, it helps afford students with learning disabilities the faculty to benefit from being in a general education program. We do so by offering adaptive visual, tactile, and kinesthetic digital learning objects that increase engagement, communication, and progress while recognizing a students understanding and mastery levels.
Wowzers Creates a Visceral Learning Experience for All Students
The virtual manipulative tools in the Wowzers program provide each student a visceral learning experience designed to reduce distractions and increase engagement. Throughout the Wowzers program the content is delivered through text-to-speech as the student listens through their headphones. This method helps students with special needs stay focused on the content that is being delivered without the outside distraction from classroom noise and movement. Every word used in Wowzers is also displayed directly on the screen, which allows hearing impaired students to still get in on the fun too.
We feel this is especially important for students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or those who struggle with topic focus and concept communication. Wowzers thematic and game-based approach captures and holds the attention of the student. We strive to help children who tend to think in pictures rather than words through the Wowzers visual presentation that is stimulating and facilitates communication. By heightening stimulation via our digital math content, the students are more likely to stay focused and learn because of the engaging content, adaptive self-paced curriculum, and our Wowzers reward system.
In fact, the Wowzers reward system goes beyond just getting students interested in learning. As students progress through Wowzers, they earn valuable Wowzers Coins which they can use to purchase personalized adornments for their avatar and Buzzpod. The extrinsic value gained from acquiring Wowzers coins helps students stay focused and increases the want and need for learning/paying attention to what is happening on the screen. The students self-esteem is also increased as they improve and customize their avatar and Buzzpod, offering visual, personalized representation of their progress.
Giving Every Kid a Chance to Show Progress
Wowzers technology also helps educators connect with special needs students. The digital progress data collected as a student makes his or her way through Wowzers assists in detecting the students mastery level. This is important with special needs students, because it is sometimes difficult to evaluate progress when a student has trouble expressing thoughts verbally and/or in written form. Technology and reporting helps those student communicate what they know with their actions and abilities instead of words or writing.
